IFW16: Breakthrough Talent

Indigenous Football Week 2016

In 2016, 12 young John Moriarty Football (JMF) players from remote Borroloola, NT had the opportunity to walk out with the Socceroos at the World Cup Qualifier vs Jordan in Sydney. The Socceroos generously donated $90,000 in match payments from that game, enabling JMF to move our first scholarship holders to Sydney.

Indigenous Football Week (IFW) 2016 noted the breakthrough talent of then 14 year old Shadeene (Shay) Evans, JMF’s inaugural scholarship holder. Scouted by Matildas coach Alen Stajcic, Shay’s attendance at Westfields Sports High and the NSW Institute of Sport were highlighted as steps in her burgeoning career.

IFW16 illustrated the beginnings of Shay’s journey, and the power of football to improve wellbeing and educational outcomes for young Aboriginal players.
