Indi Kindi embeds ASQ-TRAK Developmental Screening Tool into program delivery

In 2026, Indi Kindi completed training and commenced use of the ASQ-TRAK screening tool into our everyday program delivery. Developed specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, this innovative culturally appropriate developmental screening tool is the first tool of its kind designed to support young learners to grow up strong in education, wellbeing, and connection to Country.

The ASQ-TRAK, or Ages and Stages Questionnaire – Talking about Raising Aboriginal Kids, was designed by Australian developmental paediatrician from the University of Melbourne, Dr. Anita D’Aprano. It was co-designed with Aboriginal communities, health workers and researchers from the NT.

This tool helps to monitor children’s development in a culturally safe way to ensure that appropriate allied health supports are sought, and that early learning programming is tailored as needed to be inclusive of all children who attend Indi Kindi.”

The ASQ-TRAK uses a conversational, interview-based approach and doesn’t rely on visiting external clinicians and screenings conducted in formal clinic settings. Instead Indi Kindi educators will partner with parents and caregivers, making them co-observers in their child’s development, building health literacy, celebrating child milestones, strengthening caregiver capability, and guiding referrals and follow ups with health professionals when extra support is needed.

The tool enables comprehensive, real-time progress tracking and monitors five essential developmental domains including motor skills, communication, and problem solving. The aim of the ASQ-TRAK developmental monitoring is to promote development and allow early identification of developmental difficulties, facilitate early intervention and optimise the health of children.

In July, the Tennant Creek Indi Kindi team journeyed 700km to Borroloola for a joint ASQ-TRAK training session. It was the first time that all the Indi Kindi educators have come together in one place. It was an enriching experience for all involved. In addition to the ASQ-TRAK training, there were lots of stories and traditions shared during a Cooking on Country session.
